Work
experience
Koninklijke Oosterberg (2020- now)
Data scientist

What I do
Oosterberg is a wholesale electronics company operating in the Netherlands. As a data scientist, I translate raw financial, logistical and marketing data into usable insights and predictive models to increase operational efficiency, decrease customer churn and increase revenue and customer satisfaction.
What I learned (so far!)
Since working for Oosterberg, I improved my programming skills (both in Python & SQL), got the chance of applying my knowledge on statistical modeling like never before, learned how to deploy models in production (Azure Apps; Docker; Streamlit...), acquired skills related to data engineering (writing stored procedures, maintaining my own databases) and familiarized myself with dashboarding (Power BI).

Ghent University / VUB (2019-2020)
Assistant Bachelor in Social Sciences (BscSS) | PhD student

What I did
I co-created a new course titled ‘digital methods’, which covers topics related to collecting and analyzing digital data (webscraping, API’s, data wrangling, machine learning, natural language processing,…). I also assisted several other courses which were mainly focused on developing students' writing and argumentative skills. Finally, I wrote several academic articles with a strong focus on novel statistical methods and machine learning.

What I learned
My time at Ghent University allowed me to get acquainted with Python, webscraping (e.g. Selenium) and Big Data analysis (e.g. Dask).

TriFinance (Jul 2018-Nov 2018)
Data consultant

What I did
I served as the main data scientist for the 'HR analytics project'. We aimed to leverage the vast amount of data available in several personnel databases to gain some insight into common HR-processes. The end goal was to increase our understanding of when and why consultants leave the company to inform HR-workflows.
What I learned
I especially improved my skills in R during my time at TriFinance.

iVOX (2017-2018)
Researcher

What I did
I learned to conduct market research from A to Z: rom designing surveys, analyzing data to presenting results to stakeholders. I was especially interested and specialized in conducting voter profiling analyses for political parties and introducing new methodologies (e.g. decision trees, Latent Class Analysis,…) within the company.
What I learned
My time at iVOX taught me how to work more efficient and develop a commercial mind-set geared towards translating abstract research results into actionable insights for our customers.

University of Leuven (KUL) (2015-2017)
Assistant media use and effects

What I did
I taught the practical sessions of the course ‘quantitative data analysis’. I developed my own learning materials and exercises using real research data. Moreover, I assisted several other courses focused on scientific reasoning, conducting scientific research and developed the learning materials for the course ‘psychology of social media’. I also gave several guest lectures on film history and film analysis at Leuven University and LUCA School of Arts (film school).

What I learned
My assistant position at Leuven allowed me to deep-dive into the fundamentals of statistical modeling and it served as an ideal training ground to further develop my teaching skills.

Second Chance School Mechelen (2014-2015)
Teacher

What I did
I taught several courses: civics, Dutch, Organisation & Cooperation, Research, Sociology, Psychology.
What I learned
This position served as an intensive training ground for my teaching skills.
